Summary: Kennedy and Willow get a night off.

The Summer's house was blissfully quiet in Sunnydale, California. It was a cool evening and everyone was out of the house except for a handful of people. Spike and Buffy were downstairs in the basement having a never-ending conversation. Willow was thankful for the quiet; all but one of the Slayers in Training had gone away for the weekend. Only her favorite mini slayer was left. She looked over at her now and pushed her hair behind her ear. Kennedy responded with a smile. Kennedy was just happy to get some one on one time with Willow. They were both sitting up in bed flipping though channels letting supper settle.

"There is nothing on." Kennedy said while still trying to find something interesting. Willow rearranged her pillow and cuddled up to Kennedy.

"Well let's do something else then."

"Like what?" Kennedy moved in a little closer.

"I don't know, we could go for a walk, or get a movie...oh, I could read to you from this new book about blood pathways." Willow went on excitedly. "Well, it is not so new, ancient in fact, but it's new to me and has all this..."

"No thank you." Kennedy interrupted her. "No research unless we have to." She finished with a smile to make sure she did not hurt Willow's feelings.

"It's not research...it's fun." Willow knew that she was just tormenting the brown-haired mini slayer. They laughed together.

"It seems like forever since we've had a night off." Willow remarked.

"Yeah, nothing to do. No world to save." Kennedy went on. "It's like a Sunday, when you can sit around in your pajamas and watch TV all day."

"Even if there's nothing on." Willow added.

"Even if there's nothing on..." Kennedy affirmed.

"Well let's go for a walk, figure out what we want to do." Willow got up off the bed. "It would be nice for us to give Buffy and Spike the run of the house."

The two walked towards Sunnydale's busier part of town. With the cooler evening Kennedy wore her brown leather jacket and Willow wore her favorite sweater. They held hands to keep warm too. People were out and about going places and getting ready for a Saturday evening. The sun was down but the sky remained pretty with a faint wash of gold.

"Why don't we get a movie?" Willow asked.

"Sure. It will be better than watching reruns all weekend." Kennedy agreed. The two went into the local video store.

Willow and Kennedy exited the movie rental store with their sodas, a movie and headed for home. Sunnydale had cooled off; Kennedy buttoned up her brown leather jacket while Willow zipped up her purple sweater.

"I don't know who has the mush for brains that would make some of those movies." Willow griped to Kennedy. "They seem so stupid. Like having a step mother as an alien...who thought up that riveting plot?" Kennedy giggled and placed her arm in Willows, she loved it when she went on a rant about nothing. Willow knew this and kept on with the entertainment.

"Or some of those MTV reality shows that they put in the movie store just to make a couple of bucks more. Like really, who's going to watch all that?" Kennedy tried to get Willow really fired up.

"Yeah...yeah!" Willow agreed enthusiastically. The two giggled nearly uncontrollably.

The two walked slowly back home complaining about pop culture, soda prices and sweater lint. The park they had just passed through led into one of Sunnydale's many cemeteries. They stopped out of habit as they came to the cusp.

"Dare we?" Kennedy asked comically.

"Well sure, I've got a Slayer girlfriend as a body guard!" Willows grip on Kennedy's arm tightened.

"What?" Kennedy acted shocked. "You're seeing Buffy?" She kidded. "You two timing little..." Both girls laughed at the joke.

Their conversation did quiet down and eventually stop all together. Streetlights did not filter light this far into the graveyard. The heavy atmosphere of the area had the effect of dissipating their joyous mood. Soon they could hear every footfall and the rush of the wind through the treetops. Kennedy felt uneasy, like this was not the best path to take home. She glanced at Willow and saw that she was unfazed. Willow caught her sneaking a look and gave her a big smile. The mini slayer felt comforted with that. The two were half way through the graveyard when Kennedy felt a chill down her spine. She shook it off thinking that it was just the environment creeping her out. They walked a bit more and it happened again, but this time she felt more than a chill down her spine. She felt a presence, like someone was out there.

"Okay, that's just too weird." She thought aloud. They both stopped.

"What's up?" Willow looked around and back at Kennedy. "You okay?"

"I just have a funny feeling that we are being followed, or something is out to get us..." Kennedy admitted to herself that she was a bit embarrassed. She did not trust all of her feelings, just the ones she had for Willow.

"Well this is the Hell Mouth...and we are in one of the larger graveyards in Sunnydale." Willow turned her head to a side and looked off in thought. "Maybe this was not the best of ideas."

"Why don't we just keep going...since we are half way." Kennedy spread her arms to indicate the way back and the way they were going. Willow nodded in agreement.

The two increased their pace and walked a little more when Kennedy hesitated again as they got close to a large mausoleum.

"Feeling funny again?" Willow stopped too. She looked around and saw nothing but headstones and bushes. Kennedy wore a focused look on her face.

"I don't know...but I keep thinking someone is following us." Kennedy did not turn around but Willow looked behind her. There was no one.

"Do you think...do you think that you are starting up with your 'slayer senses'?" Willow made some air quotes with her fingers. "That would be really cool, but I thought those were only to detect vampires." Kennedy raised an eyebrow to her friend. "Oh...ohh!" Willow grabbed Kennedy's arm. "That's great that you are developing your powers, but that also means we're being stalked by vampires. That could mean trouble."

"Trouble?" Kennedy finished her soda and threw the empty container into the bushes. "You're a powerful witch and I'm a mini vampire slayer." Kennedy turned around to face what ever was out there. "I think it's them that have the problems..." Kennedy rethought her quip. "It's them that get the trouble..." Kennedy shrugged her shoulders and sighed. "I guess I don't have the tough talk down...," she said all disappointed. Willow rested a hand on her shoulder.

"It was a good try. If I were a vampire, and I was once..." Kennedy looked strangely at Willow. The red head attempted to explain. "Well not me, another me...from a different universe you know." Willow tried a weak smile. "Well I'd be scared if I were them." She said with confidence. That seemed to answer Kennedy's unasked question. They both peered back into the graveyard.

The sound of crunching gravel came from the rooftop of the mausoleum and before either of them could act a dark shape crashed down on Willows back. She crumpled to the ground and her head hit a gravestone. She was knocked out cold. Kennedy whipped around to see a short and stocky dog demon of some kind. It had eyes that shone yellow in the moonlight and fur that was patchy and decaying.

"You are in for a beat down buster." Kennedy went for the full frontal attack with her emotions running high. The beast was quick, and very strong. Kennedy got caught with a swiping attack on her arm. She checked the damage and saw that her jacket had three tears in it and she was bleeding. "You short little bastard!" She turned it up a notch and answered with some blows of her own.

The fight was going poorly, and things were not in favor of Kennedy. She stole a look over at Willow lying against the headstone hoping for some relief. Her red-haired maiden was not going to be coming to her rescue tonight. The mini slayer tried to block the creatures' blows but landed up on her back in the process. The beast jumped on her and held her in place, reveling in its victory. Kennedy struggled widely, but to no avail as the beast used it's claws to hold her down. Gruesome lips pulled back to reveal jagged teeth; this Kennedy did not want to see. It brought its muzzle closer to Kennedy's face; some slobber drooled onto her cheek. Kennedy closed her eyes and turned her face away.

With a loud clang the weight came off Kennedy's chest. The beast was struck back into the wall of the mausoleum. She opened her eyes to see another blow come down on the creature. The pipe made another tune as it connected with the creature's skull. Kennedy propped herself up on her elbows and blinked several times to see if she was seeing correctly. Her savior was tall, muscle bound and...Had scales. She could only see him from behind; he wore simple jeans with the cuffs rolled half way up his calves and a tan tank top that had seen better days. Unquestionably his entire body was hairless and covered with blue green scales, like an alligator.

Kennedy did not realize that the fight was over, she was occupied with trying to figure out the new comer. The man, if you could call him that, turned with pipe in hand and spoke to the mini slayer on the ground.

"Are you okay?" It inquired with a gruff voice through a mouthful of sharp teeth.

"Wha..." was all Kennedy could muster.

"You should get your friend some help." The creature pointed at Willow with the bloody pipe in its hand. Kennedy looked over and saw a smattering of blood on grave stone that she had not seen before. When she looked back the scaled man and the creature that attacked them was gone. Only the bloody pipe remained. Kennedy hastily stood and looked around for him. She could not see anything. She picked up the pipe and felt the weight of it as if to confirm the events that just took place. She shook her head in an attempt to clear it. A grown from Willow took Kennedy out of her daydream.

"What happened?" Willow asked while clutching the back of her head. Kennedy helped her sit up.

"We got attacked. They jumped us from behind." Kennedy took a look at the back of Willows head. Her hand came back covered with blood. "Uh oh."

"I guess your slayer powers were right." Willow said meekly.

"Yeah, but not for the better." Kennedy replied.

"So you took care of them?" Willow asked. "How many were there?"

"I'm not really sure..." Kennedy trailed off as she helped Willow to her feet.

"Now you have me confused..." Willow questioned her friend.

"I'll have to explain later, because...I'm not sure what happened." Kennedy took a final look around. "We should get you out of here." The mini slayer helped her friend up and they set off home.

"Buffy." Kennedy shouted as she banged open the front door with her foot. Willow was under her arm holding her head. The two stumbled over to the couch. Spike entered the room he quickened his pace when he saw Kennedy pouring over Willow; he could smell blood.

"What happened?" He asked as he came over to the couch.

"We got jumped by some baddies." Kennedy replied.

"Is she alright?"

"I'll be fine." Willow said sternly. "I think the bleeding has stopped." Willow pulled her hand off the back of her head. Unnoticed by the two girls Spikes nostrils flared the scent of fresh blood filled his lungs.

"I'll go get some bandages." Spike said hastily and left the room. "Buffy, you're needed in the living room." He shouted on his way up the stairs. Kennedy brushed Willows hair out of the way so she could see her eyes.

"Really now honey, are you okay? And don't lie to me because I'll know..." Kennedy threatened. Buffy came into the living room, by her apron and a dab of powder on her cheek it was obvious she was trying to do something domestic.

"Will, you okay?" The blonde slayer undid her apron and came and sat on the couch with the other two.

"Yes." Willow said.

"No." Kennedy said at the same time.

"Really, I'm fine." A bit irritated about Kennedy's over protective attitude Willows words were commanding.

"What happened?" Buffy asked as Spike came back into the room with medical supplies. Kennedy recounted the story of what happened while they tended to Willow.

"So who took care of it again?" Buffy asked. Kennedy shook her head.

"I not really sure who he was. But he seemed friendly enough, for a lizard man."

"Big and blue green with scales." Buffy said to Spike. "Ring any bells?"

"Nobody I know." Spike sighed.

"Sounds like research mode for the others while we check this out." Buffy said.

"The others are not in, we're it." Said Spike.

"Right." Buffy was lost for a second, then recovered. "Well Willow can have a look."

"I'll show you." Kennedy said as the three of them stood.

"I'm coming too." Willow stated.

"No. You stay..." Buffy started

"I think you..." Kennedy mirrored.

"I am going to come too." Willow interrupted the two of them with her raised hands. "I was there the first time. I'm fine now. I'm coming." The red-haired witch was adamant on this point.

"Willow we don't know if there are any more of these dog demons or even if the scales guy is a good guy or not!" Buffy pleaded her case.

"Well that's why I'm going with the three toughest fighters in the Scooby gang...and I'm no slouch myself. I just got caught by surprise." Willow was buttoning up her sweater in preparation. She adjusted the bandage on her head and put on Xander's Detroit Red Wings hat that he must have left. All covered up Willow shot the three a defiant look.

The three of them stood there, Buffy was deep in thought.

"She's your responsibility." Buffy said in a huff to Kennedy while pointing at Willow. Kennedy simply nodded. "Let's get some equipment Spike." Buffy turned and Spike followed leaving the other two in the living room alone.

"Willow do you think this is wise? I just..." Kennedy started but was stopped by Willow grasping her arms. They looked into each other's eyes without saying a word; Willow pulled Kennedy into a hug.

"I'm fine. Head wounds always bleed a lot...looks bad, but it's not. Besides I'm a fast healer." Willow pulled back but still had Kennedy in her grasp. "And I have you to watch over me." Kennedy smiled. Willow went on but mockingly took on the tone that Buffy had,"...'she's your responsibility'..." Just then Buffy came back with Spike, both armed to the teeth. Buffy had heard the mocking remark, put a hand on her hip and shot Willow a look.

"Hi." Willow smiled back meekly at her.

The walk to the scene of the crime was an awkward one. No one spoke. Kennedy stayed back with Willow while Buffy and Spike set a fast pace. Kennedy held Willows hand to provide comfort. The four of them entered the graveyard and returned to the site of the attack. Kennedy went through what had happened one more time.

"Then what happened?" Buffy asked Kennedy. In the background Spike was less interested in Kennedy's story and was looking around for escape routes. He had heard this story once before.

"I had looked over to Willow and saw that she was out cold. When I looked back he was gone." The three girls looked around. Nearby was a one of the larger mausoleums and gravestones stood everywhere.

"Buffy!" Spike had found something. The three went over to where he was. Spike stood at the entrance to a small utility shed. The door had been forced open.

The shed was nothing more than a roof over a stairwell leading below. Spike went down first. The stairs led into a common room with lockers along the walls and a set of tables and chairs. The lights were on and it appeared as though the room was used regularly by the care-taking staff.

"Yeah, they came down this way for sure." Spike said.

"How do you know." Kennedy asked.

"I can smell...two people, one of them is really foul. I reckon that'd be your dog demon. And I can smell blood. Fresh blood." Spike finished with a smile at Willow. There were three exits to the room not including the one they came through.

"Can you tell which way they went?" Buffy asked. Spike sniffed some more, walked around a bit and shook his head.

"No. Can't tell."

"Well let's split up." Buffy proposed. "You guys go that way, Spike and I will go this way. Meet back here in, say, 15 minutes." Buffy turned to go.

"Be careful." Spike added to Willow before following Buffy's lead. Kennedy and Willow watched the two go and turned towards the other door.

"In here!" Kennedy shouted to Willow as she motioned with her arm. Kennedy stepped out of the access tunnel and into a very warm room. Willow's shoes made a clip clop sound as she ran down to catch up with Kennedy. Just like the access tunnel in these sewers the lighting was poor and the air thick and humid. This room was different, the heat had pushed out all the moisture in the air and some of the fires from the boilers cast flickering shadows.

"He's in here?" Willow asked Kennedy while looking around.

"It." Kennedy corrected. "It's in here...somewhere." Kennedy also scanned the room. There were two huge boilers, each about the size of a house, in the center of the large room. Around the perimeter of the room there were pipes going in every direction. "I think I heard it bump some pipes..." Kennedy trailed off as she started to walk around one of the boilers. Willow followed close behind.

Kennedy stopped and removed her brown leather jacket. "Do you mind?" Kennedy held out her jacket to Willow. The heat from the boilers had made Kennedy's brow heavy with sweat. Willow was on the warm side too.

"No problem." Willow donned the jacket. "You may need your freedom to fight." Willow stated as she performed a couple of karate moves mockingly.

"And you may need the leather jacket for protection. Maybe even from me!" Kennedy finished with a smile.

"Hey...look at this." Willow grasped Kennedy on the arm. Behind a number of large shelves that held pipes Willow saw a control panel in the corner. There was some small task lighting illuminating the gages used to control the boilers, otherwise it was very dark. The red head went over to investigate.

"What..." Kennedy was uneasy with Willows move. She walked briskly to follow her friend. "What good is that going to do us?" Kennedy asked, her voice more of a whisper. She was watching Willows back, trying to peer into the darkness. Willow studied the panel.

"Well there might be a light switch...or a, a-ha." With a loud click the lights came on and revealed the rest of the room. "See. Just what we needed." Willow beamed proudly to Kennedy. The Slayer in Training was looking up at three demons on top of shelves. They had been ambushed.

"No, not really 'just what we needed'." Kennedy said gravely.

Willow looked up and saw that the three demons had surprised them all right. All were short and stocky with large muscles, claws and matted fur. They were ugly looking things. Kennedy assumed a fighting stance as the largest one leapt at her. She rolled with its attack and moved away from Willow. The witch saw that, with Kennedy out of the way, the only thing between her and these two demons was Kennedy's leather jacket. They leapt at Willow in quick succession.

Instinct took over for the witch and her eyes filled with the darkness. She uttered an incantation and the first demon was thrown back before it reached her. In the air it collided with the second leaping demon and the two of them crashed into the shelves. With a loud series of clangs a section of free pipes fell off the shelves and began rolling onto the two demons. After a few moments neither pipe nor demon moved.

Kennedy was not fairing as well. She did not want a repeat of what had happened earlier that night. Her opponent was bigger, stronger and, well, had claws. She was quicker though, and she used that every opportunity to dodge the demons big swipes. With a quick roll to get out of the way of a double attack the brown-haired mini slayer came up with a short lead pipe in her hands.

"Want to play some base ball?" She asked of the demon as she swung. Swing and a miss. The demon backed off a bit, but the contest was not over.

Willows head was reeling. She was simply standing there, not even looking in Kennedy's direction. She was trying to recover her power, her inner strength. Black pools still filled her eyes, and her body was still filled with the powers of black magic. The battle had not ended for Willow, her fists clenched she fought to regain control.

"I won't...I can't...can not..." A single tear of blood slipped out of her eye and ran down her cheek. "Must not let..."

Slowly circling around each other Kennedy pointed the pipe at her opponent. Quickly she glanced at Willow and saw that she was not in danger. She had beaten her demons, so why was she just standing there.

"Willow, you okay?" She asked with her eyes locked on her opponent. The demon seemed to crack a smile with its ugly mouth and attacked. Kennedy swung and blocked with the pipe. Training with the sword and her quick reflexes kept her unhurt. The demon was not getting anything on Kennedy this time.

Willow faintly heard a voice she recognized. "That's Kennedy..." she thought. "Kennedy...she's...she's..." Willow felt sick to her stomach, she turned and caught herself on the control panel. Her hand was near the light switch. "This...this switch was important." Willow mustered her strength and flipped the switch.

Kennedy had gotten in some solid blows with the heavy pipe, including one on the creatures' head, but then all went dark. Willow had switched the lights off and Kennedy was not able to get her eyes to adapt fast enough. Suddenly she found herself being pushed to the floor as the demon ran by her. Apparently the demon was calling this one a draw. There was a loud clanging of pipes and then all was quiet.

"You okay?" Willow was over helping Kennedy up of the floor. "I think they've left us." Kennedy looked around into the darkness, but something inside told her they were alone. She left the pipe on the floor and dusted herself off with Willows help.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Why did you shut the lights off? I don't think that was the best idea..." Kennedy wore a look of concern for her friend.

"Oh, well..." Willow was grasping for an idea. "I thought that it would throw the demon off...his game. Then you could knock him on the head...with your pipe!" Willow finished with a confident smile. Kennedy cocked her head sideways; her expression now had even more concern. Willow kept her smile and Kennedy gave up worrying. Her frown melted into a smile and she reached her hands inside the jacket Willow was wearing and gave her a big hug.

"Well at least you're okay."

"And I didn't even need the jacket." Willow answered.

Kennedy led Willow out the door with her hand.

"We have got to find Buffy and warn her." Willow was glancing around as Kennedy forged on.

"Yeah, I don't want to do 3 on 2 unless it's in our favor." Kennedy scanned the route ahead through the tunnels. There were intermittent small discs of light on the floor made by the unevenly spaced lights. Kennedy quickened the pace to avoid another surprise encounter. The two came back to the storage room that they had split up with Buffy and Spike. The lockers remained partially opened and the tables with chairs were still in the original positions.

"Well we're back where we know at least." Willow was breathing a bit harder than usual. The red head started to make for the door that Buffy and Spike went through but stopped when Kennedy stood her ground. "Are you not coming?" Willow motioned to the open door. Kennedy cocked her head to one side and looked at the far door, the one that neither group had gone through. It was only open a crack.

"Something is going on behind that door..." Kennedy trailed off as she started to walk slowly towards it. Willow moved to catch up with her. She grabbed her lovers arm.

"Hey, Chickie, what about meeting up with Buffy and Spike?" Kennedy took Willow's hand off her arm and pulled her towards the far door. "But don't you..."

"Shhh..." Kennedy silenced Willow with a finger to her lips. The two moved right up to the door, both listening through the cracked opening. The noise was not coming from the next room but from some where off in the distance. Down this hallway they could hear some familiar growling and noises of a fight. Kennedy flung open the door and took off at a jog down the hallway. Willow followed close behind.

They came out upon a mezzanine area above a large storage room. Boxes were placed everywhere. Kennedy could hear some blows being landed and more growling going on down below them but could not find a way down through the clutter. Willow shifted a small box out of the way to see if Buffy and Spike were in dire need of support. Who she saw were not the people she knew.

"Kennedy!" Willow spoke in a hushed shout. Kennedy stopped her search and responded to Willows come hither motions. Both women looked down below; Kennedy narrowed her eyes when she recognized what she saw.

"I know that guy."

The area below was a larger storage room that was well lit. More boxes and pallet were arranged haphazardly. Down on the floor was the...thing from earlier on in the evening. The scaled man defending himself from one of the demon dogs. Kennedy got to see him in action now and was impressed. The demon attacked as the scaled man blocked and then followed up with a retort. He had amazing strength; the familiar pipe was again in his hands. A loud clang signaled the end of the fight as the demon dog fell to the floor. He was still wearing the jeans with the cuffs rolled up but his tank top was missing. A few large scars could be seen on his torso. At his feet lay a large burlap sack with the top drawn shut.

Out from behind a pile of boxes came a woman all dressed in black. From under her leather jacket she produced a similar looking burlap sack.

"Doc." She spoke as she threw the sack at the scaled man. Willow and Kennedy exchanged puzzled looks. The scaled man, who's name appeared to be 'Doc' caught the bag and began to stuff the demon dog inside of it.

"Creepy much?" Willow whispered to Kennedy. The mini slayer sniffed understandingly. The woman on the floor obviously appeared to know the scaled man. She was watching Doc do his duty with her hands on her hips.

"Do you think she's working for him?" Kennedy whispered.

"Looks like he's doing her dirty work..." Willow answered. The new woman jerked her head with Willows last comment as if she heard it. Both Willow and Kennedy instinctively shrunk back behind the boxes getting better cover. The lady flipped her raven hair and slowly turned and scanned the room, including the mezzanine up above. Willow and Kennedy got a good look at the lady. She was very pretty, had a darker complexion and a young face. Living on the Hell Mouth had taught Willow that image is not everything. This pretty young lady might not be what she seemed.

"I am ready Nadia." Doc said as he hefted the two full bags over his shoulder effortlessly. The lady did not appear to hear him; she concentrated on the mezzanine. Willow and Kennedy did not make a sound. "I am ready Nadia." Doc said again, he had no irritation in his voice, it was like he was used to repeating himself.

"Yes...yes." Nadia said absent-mindedly. She scanned for a few seconds more and seemed to gather her thoughts. "We have what we need, time to go." She strode purposefully to an alternate exit with Doc following. Kennedy and Willow stood and went back to the door.

"Looks like there is more to this than we thought." Willow said when she was sure they were out of earshot.

"What did she mean 'we have what we need'?" Kennedy questioned her friend. "Why would you need a demon or two?"

"I can think of a few reasons..." Willow said gravely.

Kennedy and Willow were waiting in the common room for Buffy and Spike. They had been there for 10 minutes with no sign of the couple. They sat in silence when they heard a distant howl. Both girls looked at the door that led to the boiler room.

"We should check that out." Willow stood and straightened her hat.

"Do you want to wait for Buffy and Spike?" Kennedy asked.

"I'm sure they heard it too. We'll meet them there." They headed for the door and down the hall.

Kennedy and Willow moved down past the boiler room and went to where they thought they heard the howl. They came across a door that was slightly ajar with a shaft of light spilling out into the hallway. No sounds escaped the room now. Kennedy stopped and cocked and ear but all she could hear was a low gentle humming. The mini slayer looked to her Wiccan friend with an unspoken question. Willow nodded. Kennedy silently pushed the door open just enough to squeeze in.

The two stood on a small landing with a stairway going down to the main floor. This room was large and well lit. The center of the room had been cleared for a strange machine. Around the edge of the room were boxes, shelves and spare maintenance materials stacked high. There was no one in the room but the two women.

Kennedy examined the machine. There was a large metal hoop that was attached with cables to a control panel of some sort. That in turn was connected to some chemistry equipment with a rainbow of colors squishing and squirting through the glass tubes. Willow could feel the machine, it had power. She went down the stairs. Kennedy followed closely. Unnoticed by Kennedy small black flecks swirled in Willow's eyes as she got nearer the machine.

The two stood in front of the machine, Willow with her hands outstretched. Her eyes swirled in darkness now. She pulled back her hands to her temples.

"It hurts..." Willow was in pain all of a sudden. Her eyes were clear again, but closed. Kennedy put an arm around Willow.

"You okay?" She asked. Willow took a deep breath and the pain had left just as soon as it had came. She straightened up again.

"Yeah. I'm fine." She assured the mini slayer.

"What was that all about?" Kennedy asked.

"I don't know." Willow said slowly.

"What is it?" Kennedy indicated to the machine. Willow was holding out her hands again and could feel the power coming from the object. It came in waves and coursed through her blood.

"It's...it's some kind of engine." Willow lowered her hands and faced Kennedy. "I think." She said a little bit unsure.

"A Generator." The door shut at the top of the stairs and Nadia stood facing the girls. "It is a generator." She grabbed the railing and descended slowly. "It took me a long time to figure out the correct materials, the right semantics and, of course, the best fuel." Nadia pointed to a small pile of burlap bags; some soaked with blood. She wore a proud little smile and stopped within arms reach of the two. Willow's brow was furrowed and Kennedy's eyes were squinted, both regarded Nadia like a mad scientist.

"What does it generate?" Kennedy asked.

"It makes a powerful serum." Nadia said proudly.

"But you have to...feed it?" Willow asked with an arched eyebrow.

"Yes, some must go in to get something out." Nadia explained.

"So you just round up creatures and feed them to your machine?" Kennedy stammered.

"I am cleansing the area of dog demons and their like. Not so different from what you do." Nadia finished with her finger tapping on her chin.

"That is totally not what we do..." Kennedy was upset and showed it by placing her hands on her hips.

"We protect Sunnydale and it's residents from the Hell mouth." Willow said protectively.

"Yeah." Kennedy added. Nadia sighed.

"You have to see the bigger picture here Willow." Nadia started and was cut off.

"That's what I'm afraid of...what are your plans for this machine?" Willow pointed an accusatory finger at Nadia. "Up to no good, that's what a machine like that is for, and I don't trust the looks of your friend Doc." The mention of his name got a raised eyebrow from Nadia. Willow went on. "Oh yeah, we've been watching you guys...and..." Willow was not sure where to go with this, "and we don't like it!" She looked at Kennedy for assurance. Kennedy was eager and nodded profusely.

"Also the fact that Doc is a demon himself." Kennedy said. She squinted her eyes at Nadia for a moment. "And I'm not so sure you're entirely human either." Kennedy's slayer powers were giving her some feelings she was not used to yet.

"So what are you going to do about that?" Willow finished. Nadia shook her head. Her hair hid a smile.

Kennedy felt a presence right behind them, she moved her head just enough to see a large blue green figure. Slowly she turned her back on Nadia and faced Doc. She gripped Willow's hand and the two girls made eye contact.

"Your champion is very observant." Nadia made a motion with her chin behind Willow. She turned her head to see Kennedy having a stare down with Doc. Nadia went on. "Not too many have lived after seeing the good doctor." Nadia crossed her arms and took on an arrogant pose. "Actually, not too many have seen Doc." She added as an after thought. "What are you going to do about that?" Nadia finished with a finger pointing at Willow.

Kennedy needed the upper hand in this fight she thought. A gave a quick concerned look at Willow and jumped at the green monster with a kick. Caught a bit by surprise Doc was pushed back and away from the other two. Kennedy continued her relentless attack while Doc protected himself.

Willow took the initiative too and forced Nadia back with a spell of her own. Nadia skidded on the ground and came up near some crates.

"You will be sorry you did that witch." Nadia created a purple haze in between her hands and a stream shot towards Willow. The stream was deflected by Willow's defensive globe of light, but Nadia kept the stream going.

With Kennedy's assault Doc fell back into some crates, wood splintered and the clang of metal could be heard. There on the ground were a whole bunch of spare pipe parts. Doc smiled and chose his weapon. Kennedy saw the 3 feet of steel her opponent had brandished and went on the defensive. Doc swung away wildly.

"You have a great well of power within you witch, yet you do not use it." Nadia increased the output of the stream. "In fact..." it seemed as though she looked deep into Willow's eyes, "You are afraid of it." Willow looked straight back. Nadia went on. "You have used it in the past, nearly all of it. Why do you shunt it so?"

"That was in the past, I do not want to get into that filth again." Willow pursed her lips and concentrated, her shield holding up with the extra load.

"Filth?" Nadia questioned. "What are you talking about? Power is power, be it dark or light." Nadia sighed. "You both have so much to learn my child."

Kennedy was up on some crates dodging Docs crushing blows. He swung down hard as Kennedy jumped away. The crate was smashed into a thousand pieces. The mini slayer needed something to combat Docs new and improved reach. She maneuvered and retreated until she was where she wanted to be. Again on a crate Kennedy leapt off it as Doc destroyed that one too. She dove and went into a roll and when she came up she had a 3-foot pipe in each hand and a smile on her face.

"Are you ready to play big boy?" She teased.

Back and forth Willow and Nadia moved the shoving match of energy. This was very difficult for Willow, and it showed. She was beginning to sweat with the effort. Willow desperately did not want to draw on the dark forces that she knew were inside her. Some paths were more difficult to travel. Nadia was testing the witch, with a little boost she began to push the stream closer to Willow.

The clang of metal on metal was deafening to the two combatants. Kennedy had the upper hand because of her skill of wielding the two versus Doc's one. She pounded away as he tried to keep up his defenses. The odd opening came and Kennedy struck home hard. Doc was bleeding now and he was sure his ribs were broken.

"You may not win this one Willow." Nadia and Willow were about twenty feet apart. The light from the stream meeting the globe lit up the entire room. "I will have you in a couple of minutes..." Nadia warned.

"You'll never have me." Willow was struggling but her globe held. Flecks of black started to pass by Willow's eyes. The globe expanded and pushed the stream back towards Nadia. "No!" She thought. "Don't want to go there..." The darkness left her eyes and the purple stream got a little closer. Willow needed some help, she looked over at Kennedy and saw that she was doing well enough on her own.

With a double attack Kennedy dropped Doc's defense and hit him square in the skull. Blood sprayed on the machine and on Kennedy. Everything went dark for a moment for the big man and the mini slayer planted her foot right in his chest. Doc fell back and into the Generator. Lights flashed and sparks flew. Doc lay motionless on the floor in a tangled mess of live cables. His body twitched now and again.

Kennedy looked back to Willow. Sweat trickled down Willow's face matting her hair. The two magi were locked in a contest, and Willow was losing. Kennedy started to make for Nadia with her two pipes. The little slayer wanted to beat the pulp out of the dark-haired witch. Willow saw Kennedy and shook her head ever so slightly. Kennedy stopped.

"Sabotage the machine..." came the phantom voice from Willow.

Kennedy understood and off she went to the device. She took both of her steel pipes and shoved them into one of the moving parts. With a loud crack the wheel stopped dead, it's spokes hindering further motion with the pipes in the way. The Generator did continue to run and began to make strange noises.

Kennedy stood at the ready and watched the two battle with magic. Willow had a pained expression on her face and was struggling. Nadia was cool and collected; her eyes narrow and focused on her objective. Kennedy looked back and forth between them, she knew things did not look good for her Willow. She wanted to do something, but what? With another surge of power Nadia washed over Willow's defense just for a moment, but it was enough to put the younger woman to one knee.

"Willow!" Kennedy cried out. The little slayer went to go and help her lover.

"Stay back!" Willow said in a raspy shout.

Just then from the Generator made a little popping noise. Nadia looked over and saw Kennedy standing in front of the machine.

"What did you do little girl?" Nadia said calmly. The Generator then began to whine. Very quickly the whining got louder. "No, no." Nadia looked over to the Generator and shook her head in disbelief. "No. Do not fail on me now." Willow could not stop the dark witch's power anymore. Her defense fell. Nadia was not focusing on Willow and her stream powered into her. Willow was thrown back into the wall. With a dull thud she slid to the ground. Kennedy rushed to Willow as Nadia walked over to the Generator. Their eyes met, Kennedy's glowing with hatred, Nadia's alive with curiosity.

Kennedy tried to wake Willow but could not. Blood had come out of her nose and ears. She was hurt badly and needed attention right away or else...Kennedy did not want to consider the alternative. She looked around hastily for something, anything that could be used as a bandage. Her eyes fell upon three vials filled with a green liquid.

Nadia tried to repair the damage done to her precious machine. The whining was very loud and the heat it gave off was tremendous. She looked down at her partner lying there in the power cables. She could not hear the groan that escaped from the big man but she could see him bring his hand to his head. The machine was so hot it caught fire.

Kennedy took the cork out of the vial and fed it all to Willow. Right now she did not care about the consequences, all she wanted was for her Willow to stay alive. She cleaned the blood off of Willow's face with her shirt corner. Nothing was happening fast. Kennedy turned around to see where Nadia was and saw her. She was dragging Doc along the floor to an exit. For a second their gaze met. Nadia continued her efforts while Kennedy caught sight of the fire.

"Time to go honey, whether you like it or not." Kennedy picked up Willow an arm under her knees and one at her back. She went up the stairs as fast as she could. Kennedy wasted no time and got clear of the building. Just in time to get behind a tree the lower level exploded and the concrete walls caved in on each other. A cloud of dust spread over everything.

Kennedy lay Willow down on the cool grass. Willow's eyelids fluttered furiously and then she opened them to see Kennedy bent over her.

"You okay?" Kennedy asked with great concern.

"I wish this was a Sunday, so I could just sit on the couch all day." Willow was still strong enough to joke about her pain.

"Well tomorrow I declare to be Sunday and we will sit on the couch all day." Kennedy said with a tear coming down her cheek. "There might even be ice cream involved."

"This time can we get a better movie? I didn't like the last one." Willow was smiling now, her head clearing away the cobwebs.

"We can watch movies all day...if that's what you want to do." Kennedy said with a mischievous grin. She helped Willow up and they set off home.
